The simplest way to describe a 3 point linkage disc plough is that it is like a giant garden tiller with notched blades. It breaks up the ground, chops light roots and cuts any weeds or residue from the previous year’s crop. It also prepares the soil for seeding and accelerates weed root decomposition. They are available in a wide range of options with different numbers of discs, disc sizes and spacings, as well as adjustable angles for varying tilling depths.

When choosing a disc it is important to find one with enough built in weight so the machine will level correctly front to rear. Some gangs have feathering blades on the outer end of the gang which help to prevent deep furrows and/or ridges between machine passes in the field. It is also a good idea to play around with how the gangs are set for each application and to use some ballast on them.

It is recommended to run the disc at 4-1/2 to 5mph for best results. If the disc is running too slow it will dig little into the soil and if too fast it will tend to ride on top of the ground instead of digging.
