Large Rock Picker

A large rock picker is a tractor pulled implement to sieve through the top layer of soil to separate and collect rocks and soil debris from good topsoil. It works similar to a rock windrower (rock rake). The Degelman large rock picker has a huge 2.5 cubic yard hopper, tapered T-iron grate and heavy duty batt tubing for strength and durability. This allows soil to sift through and prevent jamming and allows for quick, clean picking. Large tires distribute the weight and minimize rutting in soft, wet conditions. A pivoting hitch pole enables the Degelman to quickly move from an offset picking position to a centered transport position.

Rocks in fields are a common problem for farmers. Tillage, frost heave and erosion all contribute to their annual arrival on the field surface. Clearing these stones helps reduce damage to farm equipment (such as hay balers, combines and mowers) and improves the ability of the land to produce crops.

While mechanical tools to remove surface rocks have been improving over the years, people remain the dominant method of picking in most environments. This article explores the different types of pickers and provides a comparison based on important decision criteria.

The most important factor in selecting a large rock picker is how well the tool performs in your specific environment. Many rakes and reels are designed for rock density on bare fields but are ineffective in no-till, pasture and stubble environments. In these conditions, precision picking is the only way to effectively remove buried rocks at a reasonable pace.
