What is a Single Row Potato Digger?
A single row potato digger is an agricultural machinery used to dig and separate potatoes/sweet potato from the soil.single row potato digger The machine is mounted with four wheel tractor of 20 to 120 hp by rear PTO driven. It’s designed to increase the efficiency of digging potatoes planted in small areas of residential plots, farmers and farms, reduce the damage caused to potato tubers during the harvesting process and increase the quantity of the harvested product.
The device is equipped with a digging shovel and a shaker to separate crop from the soil and make the potato (sweet) tubers fall on field surface for further picking up. It has a hydraulic system to adjust the depth of the dig and to move the digging shovel forward and backward depending on the height of the ground. It is also fitted with a conveyor to elevate the potatoes/sweet potatoes to the sorting section of the machine. The conveyor system is equipped with a series of bar-shaped ridges, which help to clean the potatoes from extraneous matter and ensure the quality of the harvested product.
A three-point hitch mounted digger for tractors that straddles one centered or two rows of hilled potatoes and other root crops. It digs 12” deep on level soil and has oscillating bars above the front digging blade to break up clods, keep soil moving through the separation chain and reduce wear on the digger's front shovel. The side colters cut vines and are removable if desired. The sifting chains have a 1” gap between the sifting bars and drop potatoes, other roots and unfallen soil into the hoppers of the troughs.
This digger eliminates the effort required to hand dig potatoes, garlic and other root vegetables, and can dig a full row in just a few minutes. It is designed to reduce bruising and breaking, which means that your potatoes are in better condition for marketing or home use. Its adjustable pan angle allows the digger to penetrate into the soil without damaging the potatoes, and its adjustable wheelbase enables it to straddle rows of up to 30” wide.
Before you dig up your potatoes, it’s important to kill the vines. This is especially crucial if you’ve grown indeterminate varieties like Red Pontiac, Yukon Gold or Kennebec, which will continue to grow and bloom even after the weather turns cooler and they need to be killed by frost, or you can bring about their early death by mowing or flaming them. It’s also helpful for storability, as the dead vines prevent rotting and sprouting when you store your potatoes. In the next article in this series, we’ll talk about preparing your potatoes for long-term storage and keeping them free of rot and disease.
