Developing a solution that allows farmers to simply drive their loader over the top of rocks with a simple rubber-belt mechanism could be a game changer. That’s the premise behind a new invention by North Dakota farmers Brent Frei and Scott Thompson called The Marshall Picker, which mounts to the front of a loader or skid-steer and works to pick up rocks as they pass over the attachment.
It’s a simple solution, but one that can save farmers significant time, reduce the need for manual labor and improve efficiency and profitability. Frei and Thompson’s prototype is currently in the testing phase, and they hope to launch it in a few months.
As the founders of the Marshall Picker continue to refine their product, they are looking at ways to make it more automated and user-friendly. They are experimenting with a remote control system that would allow operators to start, stop and dump the Marshall Picker without leaving their cab. Other potential improvements include allowing the operator to change grate heights and adjust a reel bat rake height that can be prone to jamming.
In a recent test on a Marshall Picker prototype, the grate accumulated rock build-up that reduced ground speed by as much as 3 km/h (2 mph). The reel bat arms frequently jammed, and the cam wheel hubs broke from repeated retracting to clear obstructions. These problems were resolved with some adjustments.
Most tow behind rock pickers are adjustable, allowing farmers to optimize the machine for the specific soil or dirt conditions on which they operate. Many are also equipped with a dumping mechanism that allows the operator to release and dump collected rocks at a location of their choosing. Width and capacity are additional factors that vary by model, with farmers choosing tow behind rock pickers of different widths to match the dimensions of their equipment and the size of their fields. These rock pickers are highly useful in preparing land for agricultural use, and their efficient operation helps to reduce soil erosion, improve water retention and enhance nutrient availability. By reducing the amount of rock and stone in the soil, it’s easier to grow crops with less need for irrigation, leading to higher productivity.
